The word microdermabrasion means that the epidermis, which is commonly known the upper layer of the skin, has its uppermost layer, which is called the stratum corneum, sandblasted off with fine crystals, typically aluminium oxide or baking soda. The procedure not only exfoliates the skin but it is also recognized for its ability to plump up collagen which in turn helps to lessen not only scars but also the fine lines and wrinkles that are characteristic of the ageing process.
Skin and dermatology clinics are now able to provide microdermabrasion treatments that are more technically known as medical microdermabrasion. Medical microdermabrasion uses crystals that are adopted by traditional microdermabrasion machines to remove dead and old skin cells from the stratum corneum. This type of microdermabrasion therefore differs in comparison to home microdermabrasion which typically use facial creams and a hand held applicator. Medical microdermabrasion however, holds its own benefits in comparison to home treatments.
Medical microdermabrasion is usually conducted under a dermatologist’s supervision and will be performed in partnership with a chemical peel or laser surfacing treatment so that the most effective results can be achieved.
Medical microdermabrasion proves more expensive than using a home kit as professional medical supervision is not required during the use of a home treatment kit. An individual session of microdermabrasion will amount to around $100-$200 and an essential preliminary consultation with a dermatologist will amount to approximately $150.
A single session of this therapy will not obtain full skin rejuvenation and you will therefore have to commit to the cost of undergoing between eight and twelve sessions.
Numerous microdermabrasion machines are currently on the market, some of which include:
Power Peel Microdermabrasion Systems;
Derma Genesis Particle Skin Resurfacing;
SmartPeel by Sound Skin;
Dermaglide Systems;
Bella Products Particle Abrasion Systems.
In terms of microdermabrasion, it is not the machine itself but it is the way in which the machine is handled which is the determinant of good or bad results. You should ensure that the chemicals or crystals that are used in the procedure are of good quality and that the machine and its equipment are sterile.
A medical microdermabrasion session is relatively quick and will typically last between 30 and 60 minutes in duration.
